“君主?”の原タイトルには、イタリア遮 Il Principe（君主たるもの）とラテン遮 De principatibus（君主政体について）の??がある。前者はマキアヴェッリ没後五年にしてロ┼マとフィレンツェで刊行された印刷本初版（一五三二）に付せられ、以来、今日まで刊本タイトルに??として用いられてきた。後者はマキアヴェッリがこの“小?子（オプスコロ）”を?き上げたことを友人ヴェット┼リに?せた??（一五一三年十二月一?日付）のなかに?した表铨である。おそらく自剐原稿や献呈本（いずれも?存が催帐されていない）にはこの表铨が?してあったであろう。そして?にマキアヴェッリ存命中の初期写本?にはこのラテン遮タイトルが付いていた。
前者イタリア遮の?名を“君主?”と哉すならば、後者ラテン遮の?合は“君主政体?”とこそ哉すべきかもしれない。加えて、前者が代表?数形（君主）であるのに、後者は妖数形（衷君主政体）で?き表されている。こうした二肺?の原タイトルが存在することは、マキアヴェッリが作品を生み出すにあたって直面した事?のいくつかを推?させるであろう。哉者の解砧を参照していただきたい。
なお、ここに用いた“君主?（君主政体について）”という二重の表?は、近年、画期的な校?作?を成し遂げたイングレ┼ゼの普及版（エイナウディ社）にも用いられている。

译注・书名

《君主论》原有两个书名：意大利语的Il Principe（作为君主者）和拉丁语的De principatibus（关于君主政体）。前者是马基雅维利去世五年后，罗马和佛罗伦萨出版的1532年印刷本第一版使用的书名，自那时以来，时至今日的刊本都习惯性地使用这个书名。而后者是马基雅维利于1513年12月10日写信将完成这个“小册子（意大利语：opuscolo）”之事告诉其友人韦托里时，信中使用的书名。也许马基雅维利亲自书写的原稿和进献本（现已均不可考）里都使用了这个书名。所以实际上，马基雅维利在世时的初期抄本中都使用了这个拉丁语的书名。
如果将前者的意大利语书名译作“君主论”的话，也许应将后者的拉丁语书名译作“君主政体论”吧。此外，前者使用的是单数形式（君主），后者使用的则是复数形式（各种君主政体）。根据这两种原书名的存在，也许能推测出马基雅维利写出这部作品时面临的一些局势。关于这一点请参照译者的解说。
需要补充的是，本书使用了“君主论（关于君主政体）”这个双重书名，与近年来完成了划时代校订工作的英格列兹普及版（埃诺迪出版社）*使用的书名相同。

Translation and annotation―about the title

“The Prince” has two original titles: “Il Principe” in Italian (meaning “as a prince”) and “De principatibus” in Latin (meaning “about monarchies”). The former was used in Rome and Florence for the first printed edition in 1532, five years after Machiavelli’s death. Ever since then, it has been used as the conventional title of this book. The latter was used by Machiavelli in a letter to Vettori on December 10, 1513, in which he told his friend that he had finished writing this “brochure (in Italian, opuscolo)”. The latter was probably used in both Machiavelli’s manuscript and presentation copy (with neither existence being confirmed). Thus, all the early handwritten copies in Machiavelli’s lifetime used the Latin title.
If we translate the former Italian title into “The Prince”, the latter Latin title might be translated into “On Monarchies”. In addition, the former used a singular form (the prince) while the latter a plural form (monarchies). According to these variant original titles, we might be able to presume certain situation that Machiavelli confronted with when he wrote this book. Please refer to the translator’s commentary for more about this point.
Still, the title “On Prince (about monarchies)” used in this translation is also adopted by the Inglese popular edition (Einaudi press) which has accomplished some epoch-making revision in recent years.

著名的埃诺迪出版社由意大利出版商朱利奥・埃诺迪（Giulio Einaudi）创立，先后出版了一批微观史学研究的专著，所谓普及版似应为平价版（cheap edition）的代名词。Inglese为意大利语，意为English，但这里似乎是该书编辑G Inglese的姓名，故按日文片假名音译为“英格列兹”。不懂意大利语及其发音，错谬之处在所难免，请多指教。^^;;
